This lavish, large-format, 400-page book was first sighted in Venice where it's appearance coincided with the opening of the 2007 Venice Biennale. It has also been enthusiastically received at London's National Portrait Gallery and at Australia House.
Launched at the National Gallery of Victoria by its Director,
Dr Gerard Vaughan, the memorable occasion attracted a huge gathering of artists, gallerists and art world identities all keen to celebrate a publication which makes a grand statement about Australia's vibrant visual arts scene and its colourful, creative, and often quirky, individuals. Beyond the compelling full-page, and sometimes double-page portraits, the viewer is drawn into the various and highly idosyncratic studio environments that help shape each artist's approach to their work. In addition, more than 50 leading arts writers from across Australia have contributed texts for the book.
The compilation of 700 or so images, requiring Sonia Payes' travel across Australia and overseas, are sensitively revealing of the range of identities who inhabit the pages of the book. The combination of choice and chance, elements that help define the very process of making art, brings to Payes' work a palpable candour and directness of expression that reveals the unexpected and helps the viewer understand better the complexity of artistic identity. |
